New Apple Orchard For Prior Grange

Posted by | Prior Grange Guest Farm | 0 |

For the last couple of years the apple trees in the orchard at Prior Grange have supplied us with an abundance of fresh apples. These trees where planted in the mid 1940’s.Once they started receiving water they started producing lovely apples. This encouraged us to experiment with apples. We will be planting three hundred trees in mid July. The Southern Free State experiences very cold winters which is ideal for apples. The varieties we have decided on are Golden Delicious and African Red. They flower late and therefore should not be affected by late frost which is so often experienced in the Springfontein area. If all goes well we hope to have the first crop in three years time. Guests staying at Prior Grange can look forward to fresh apples picked straight from the tree.
